Bleeding gums can be a sign that you have gum disease and should never be ignored.
The main cause of bleeding gums is the build-up of plaque at the gum line. This will lead to a condition called gingivitis, or inflamed gums.
Bleeding gums should be addressed immediately by our dental hygienist or dental therapist (for children). The sooner you get this treated and have plaque removed, the better. If left untreated, gingivitis will progress to jaw bone disease and as a result can lead to tooth loss.
